Advancing Gender Equality in the Maritime Sector





The IMOGENder Network is made up of representatives and interested stakeholders at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that focuses on promoting gender equality within the maritime sector. This network aims to create a more inclusive environment by supporting the advancement and empowerment of women in maritime professions.





IMOGENder's flagship programmes include, 'Women on Board Mentor Programme', 'Best Practices and Resource Guide' to support the Recruitment & Retention of Women in the Maritime Industry,' and 'Open House Workshops' all of which are designed to create tangible pathways towards change. Additionally, IMOGENder Network supports school visits to the IMO and fosters connections with industry stakeholders. Dive into our current explorations.

Mentor Programme
The IMOGENder Network flagship programme is an exciting opportunity for members to partner with female students from the World Maritime University (WMU) and International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI). Members support and empower the next generation of women in the maritime industry.

2019
Establishment of the IMOGENder Network Assembly 31 adopted Resolution A.1147(31) ‘Preserving the Legacy of the World Maritime Theme for 2019: Achieving a Barrier-Free Working Environment for Women In the Maritime Sector’ formally recognizing the IMOGENder Network.

2021
Established the “Women on Board” Mentorship Programme with the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and World Maritime University (WMU) with the aim of providing a platform for knowledge sharing, and a coordinated effort to advance gender equality within the maritime community.
2022
The 'IMO Gender Equality Award' was put forward by IMOGENder Network Members, and was approved by the Council during its 128th session (C 128), to annually honour an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women in the maritime sector.


2023
In 2023, we mourned the loss of our beloved Member, Mrs. Mandana Mansoorian, who served as the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Maritime Organization and was also the Vice-Chair of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee. In her memory, IMOGENder honoured her family with an award celebrating her vast contribution to equality and capacity-building.
2024
The first IMOGENder Network supported school visit to IMO HQ was held to improve understanding of global maritime issues and inspires future contributions to maritime affairs.


2024
Open House initiative launched where members organise events such as workshops at their respective embassies aimed at tackling gender inequality , and focusing on practical solutions. The inaugural one, ‘Women in Maritime: Identifying Concrete Actions to Get Beyond 2%’ was held at Canada House.

environment, facilitation of maritime trade, and technical cooperation issues in the
maritime sector.
